Heritage Bank

Another popular ‘Bygone Buriton’ event

Recollections, research and reunions.

Over 100 people squeezed into Buriton village hall on Saturday September 30th for a trip down memory lane.

The annual local history event attracted visitors from many miles away and provided opportunities for memories to be shared and for new information to be unearthed.

Amongst the main attractions were scores of old photographs of the village’s sports teams, dating back over many decades.

Dozens of visitors contributed to a huge ‘photo wall’ by adding dates and names of the community’s sporting heroes from yesteryear.

How Weston helped to win the war

Buriton’s Heritage Bank has recently received two impressive Certificates.

During the Second World War a number of national campaigns were held to raise money to for the Armed Services.

The “Wings for Victory” campaign in 1943 was designed to purchase aircraft for the RAF and groups throughout the country, including schools, towns and villages, held fund-raising events.  When certain targets were met a certificate was awarded.

After missing 2020 because of the Covid pandemic, the village’s annual local history exhibition made a successful return in September - boosted by dozens of old photos of the local area taken by Buriton’s own Don Eades.

For over 25 years Don took photos for the Petersfield Post and, thanks to a special loan arrangement with the Petersfield Museum, dozens were on display on a huge ‘photo-wall’.

100km walk in the footsteps of those who fought in WWI and WWII – to raise funds for soldiers and veterans.

‘ABF, The Soldiers’ Charity’ usually organises a big fund-raising ‘Frontline Walk’ around the Western Front battlefields and the Normandy Beaches. But, due to the Coronavirus pandemic, was arranging a UK-based event this year.

New booklets mark 75th anniversary of VE Day

Three new publications have been produced as part of the Buriton Heritage Bank initiative.

The new series of booklets is dedicated to all the men and women of Buriton who helped their country during the Second World War.

Compared with the First World War, just a few short decades earlier, the loss of life was mercifully less – eight men compared with forty – and one of the new booklets attempts to tell the stories of each of the men who gave their lives whilst trying to ensure a world of peace.
