The Bookshop

Image

It is 1959 and widow Florence Green (Emily Mortimer) risks everything to open up a bookshop in the sleepy seaside town of Hardborough.

When she exposes the narrow-minded townsfolk to the best literature of the day, she gains a kindred spirit and ally in the figure of Mr Brundish (Bill Nighy), who is himself sick of the town’s stale atmosphere, but has to reckon with the hostility of other shopkeepers and of the self-appointed doyenne Mrs Gamart (Patricia Clarkson).

Based on the novel by Penelope Fitzgerald, what begins as a genteel portrait of village quirkery reveals a darker, sadder heart, and a brittle wariness of human nature, as it goes along.

Films are shown in Buriton Village Hall near Petersfield at 7.30pm (doors open at 7pm).

Refreshments are available before very show and there is an interval during which ice creams are available.

Tickets cost £5 each - having the exact money is very helpful.
