Buriton’s charity supports hundreds of schoolchildren again
Buriton’s Village to Village group funded another careers advice day in March for about 350 schoolchildren in its sister community of Dominase in Ghana.
The youngsters heard from a range of speakers including a bank manager, a lawyer, a nurse, a teacher and an engineer.
The annual event aims to help the teenagers decide subjects for the next stage of their education which can be important in their future career prospects.
In Ghana, when children are 14, they move from a junior high to a senior high school where they study only three subjects. This event aims to inform them about future career possibilities and the subjects which might help them towards particular careers.
The first of these events was initiated by the Buriton group in 2021 and it is now established as an annual occasion. Money is sent from Buriton to pay for transport to bring all the children from outlying schools to the venue and to pay for refreshments.
Feedback from education officials in Ghana suggests the events are not only helpful to the children but also to the teachers. And the teachers encourage their students to discuss with their parents the kind of subjects they might choose.
Buriton’s long-standing link with the community of Dominase in the Central Region of Ghana supports 12 Junior High Schools and a similar number of Primary Schools.
Missing out on education affects the life-chances of all these children – as it has done for generations in the past.
But, thanks to small amounts of money from Buriton, it has gradually been possible to make a difference through supplementary reading books to create school libraries, annual inter-school reading competitions (which boost enthusiasm to raise standards amongst children, teachers and parents) and supporting dozens of teachers through training courses.
The annual careers event is now adding an extra dimension to this support.
Anyone interested in helping can make a donation to the charity or take part in its regular giving scheme. Details can be found in the ‘Make a World of Difference’ leaflet on this website (here) by contacting Doug Jones via doug.pam@btinternet.com
