New careers event for children in Ghana

Help from Buriton aims to make a difference

In Ghana, when children are 14 they move from a Junior High School to a Senior High School and study only three subjects.

But how do they know what to choose? Which subjects will help them into suitable jobs? Are children in rural schools even aware of the range of jobs that they could consider?

Buriton’s long-standing link with the community of Dominase in the Central Region of Ghana is arranging a new (hopefully annual) ‘Careers Event’ to help children consider which subjects to study in their last years at school.

The village-to-village link supports 12 Junior High Schools and the new event should enable over 300 JHS children to hear from a range of speakers (bank manager, doctor/nurse, teacher, journalist, police officer etc) to help them consider their subjects and make good choices.

It is estimated that about £400 will be needed to bring children from outlying villages and pay for basic refreshments – and all donations to Buriton’s small international charity are welcomed.

Missing out on education affects the life-chances of all these children – as it has done for generations in the past.

But, thanks to small amounts of money from Buriton, we have gradually been making a difference through supplementary reading books to create school libraries, annual inter-school reading competitions (which boost enthusiasm to raise standards amongst children, teachers and parents) and supporting dozens of teachers through training courses.

It is hoped that the Careers Event will add an extra dimension to this support.
