County Council support for community initiatives

Hampshire County Council wants the county to be a place for pollinators to thrive and so it is supporting efforts being made in Buriton to create, improve and connect habitats.

Signage has recently been installed at four places in the village – including the Parish Council’s Recreation Ground where the grassy margins are already flourishing with a range of wildflowers and a noticeable increase in bees, butterflies, moths and beetles.

These small creatures are vital for flowers, crops and food production. Some experts say that one in every three mouthfuls of food that we eat depends on them.

The County Council’s initiative is intended to increase awareness and participation in villages – and to help connect local green spaces across Hampshire to help pollinators and other creatures.

Everyone can contribute to the community effort in Buriton – by pledging to make a bit of space become a haven for wildlife.

Ideas to extend the County Council’s pledge into gardens can include:

  • Use pollinator friendly plants
  • Choose a mixture of plants that flower throughout spring, summer and autumn
  • Take part in No Mow May
  • Leave areas of your garden wild
  • Keep dead wood for nesting insects
  • Start a compost bin
  • Build a bug hotel
  • Use peat-free compost
  • Avoid pesticides such as weed killer or lawn feed.
