Thanks to money raised in and around Buriton the 'Village-to-Village' charity has been able to continue to help improve living conditions and the education of children in the Dominase area of the Central Region of Ghana
During 2015 we helped schools and education by:
- delivering over 2,000 new supplementary reading books to village schools, boosting the libraries that we had already established
- arranging an inter-school reading competition, generating enthusiasm to raise standards amongst children, teachers and parents
- maintaining our teacher training initiative with 10 local teachers now in their final year of training.
The joy on the faces of the children (and teachers) when they received their new reading books had to be seen to be believed - and the books are already helping children to understand English better, which then means that they can understand so much more in all the other subjects that they study.
During 2015 we improved living conditions for families by:
- continuing our sanitation programme and helping another 80 families get their first ever household toilet
- funding repairs to an important village well - to restore vital supplies of drinking water and
- identifying locations for new blocks of toilets which we hope to commence during 2016.
And also during 2015:
- the regular amounts of income received at our events meant that we had sufficient 'match funding' to apply for a number of grants
- during the year we were awarded over £4,000 in grants to add to local income
- we received some lovely messages from Dominase:
- with the aid of supplementary readers donated to us by the Village-to-Village Group, we are noticing a great improvement in the reading abilities among our pupils
- a greater number of them can now read a variety of materials with confidence while other slower readers are also showing signs of improvement
- the books have increased the vocabularies of pupils and broadened their knowledge
- the future is now brighter for the children because their abilities enable them to read and understand other subjects better
- improved sanitation, brought about by help from Buriton, is reducing levels of serious illnesses and deaths caused by cholera and typhoid.
Thank you:
Hundreds of people helped with our fund-raising activities during 2015 and, as well as saying 'thank you' to everyone concerned, we hope that you have enjoyed all the events and activities.
Thanks to special arrangements with a generous supporter of our Charity, we are still able to ensure that every penny of money raised from all our fund-raising and donations is spent on real projects 'on the ground' in Ghana. Nothing is 'wasted' on any sort of administrative costs.
Our 'regular giving' initiative is now boosting our income and helping us plan our support for the future:
- £1 a month buys a reading book for a child every month
- £2 a month buys books to boost school libraries
- £5 a month buys a household toilet for a family every year - or enough school books for a whole classroom of children every year.
Sincere thanks to everyone who has already started to donate in this way.
