More improvements to living conditions and education in Ghana

There is more good news to report from Dominase thanks to money raised by the Buriton-based 'Village-to-Village' Charity.

Scores of new Supplementary Reading Books are now available at schools throughout the community and are used in 'Library Periods', 'Silence Hours' and 'Relaxation Time'.  Some can be borrowed to take home.

All these books came from the innovative 'Book Fair' which was held last autumn - where headteachers and governors could meet with some big suppliers of school books and with Local Education officials.

And locally-made cupboards, also provided thanks to money raised in and around Buriton, is helping to make sure that all these new resources can be stored safely and kept in good condition ?

Hundreds more books are still needed so that enough can be provided for all age groups to each have a variety of reading materials and the Group is planning to make arrangements with some of the big publishers and suppliers in Ghana.

Supplementary reading books can transform children's opportunities to learn English - which helps them learn all other subjects.  Miss out on English in their early years and children miss out on life-chance opportunities thereafter - as generations of villagers have done in the past. A good education is probably one of the best ways of helping families out of poverty.

On a recent visit, Charity Trustee Doug Jones was able to meet with the local Director of Education and discuss more ideas to help improve learning opportunities in the future.  An 'Inter-School Reading Competition' is being considered - and ways of improving the training of teachers.

The recent visit also enabled books and letters from Buriton School to be delivered to their 'link' school in Dominase - and for another school to benefit from money raised by children at Ditcham Park School.  Hand-washing facilities, using water collected from the roof of the school, will be installed so that children find it easier to keep clean and healthy.

The successful programme of subsidising the construction of household toilets is continuing and the Group is also investigating another block of toilets at another school.

All the assistance from Buriton is really gratefully received and hugely appreciated ?
