Buriton Village Hall

Facilities

Buriton Village Hall was built in 1997, replacing an earlier facility (see the History page on this website).

The Main Hall is approximately 17 metres by 8 metres - about the size of a badminton court - and can normally accommodate up to 200 people. The total number of people that can simultaneously attend the hall is governed by Health and Safety considerations.

The History of Buriton Village Hall

Over 100 years ago, on October 18th 1909, Buriton's original Village Hall was opened for the first time - and the building, on the same site as today's hall, became a social hub for the village for the rest of the century.

As Percy Legg, a schoolboy at the time, recalled later in life: "The building was erected and paid for by the then Village Squire, Mr Lothian Bonham Carter... who realised that there were many young men working hard on farms and limeworks in the area with nothing much to do after work was done for the day."

Directions

Buriton Village Hall is located in the centre of the village, just off the High Street and adjacent to the recreation ground.

Arriving in the village from the A3, go straight across at the crossroads by the Village Inn pub, entering the High Street.

After the Five Bells on the left and Buriton Primary School on the right, the Village Hall is accessed by a short uphill driveway on the right, between two houses and just after "Chapel Cottage".

Village Hall Public Meeting, Tuesday 15th November

Parishioners and users of the village hall are invited to a public meeting on Tuesday,15th November to agree the future of the hall.

The village hall is owned by the Parish Council but has been managed and run by a village hall charity. The board of trustees of this charity has had difficulty in recent years in recruiting and retaining Trustees and has decided they would like to close the charity. The trustees have asked the Parish Council if it would be willing to take over the management and running of the hall. The Parish Council has said it would be very willing to take on this role and has already set up a new village hall sub committee to ensure a smooth and seamless transition.

Village Hall to reopen in the new year

The hall floor is now dry and the Parish Council has begun to schedule the repairs.

However, given the extent of the works to be done, the hall will not re-open until the New Year. On the plus side, the continued closure will allow for some other remedial works to be undertaken.

For all enquiries about availability of the Hall, please contact Wendy Shone on 01730 268601 or email buritonvillagehall@gmail.com

Flooding in Buriton Village Hall

Unfortunately the village hall was flooded in the pre-Christmas storms. Work is underway to get the building fully operational again as soon as possible. For up to date information please visit the village hall website: http://www.buritonvillagehall.co.uk/

Water from the storms spread throughout the ground floor, including not only the main hall but also the corridor, toilets, kitchen and the storerooms. The dirty water left a film of mud and dirt across the hall, soaked the fixed carpeting and penetrated anything left on the floors in the storerooms, most particularly the carpet tiles in these rooms.
