Around the world in 80 minutes

Light-hearted lyrics, memorable melodies and clever choreography helped ensure a memorable concert in St Mary's church on Sunday 20th October.

The popular Downland Singers returned to Buriton to perform songs from the hit parade, stage shows, films and comic operas – drawing inspiration from about 20 countries.

Musical numbers included songs from Britain and the USA, from France, Spain, Italy and Scandinavia as well as from Africa, Australia, South America and more …

More improvements to living conditions and education in Ghana

There is more good news to report from Dominase thanks to money raised by the Buriton-based 'Village-to-Village' Charity.

Scores of new Supplementary Reading Books are now available at schools throughout the community and are used in ‘Library Periods’, ‘Silence Hours’ and ‘Relaxation Time’.  Some can be borrowed to take home.

Charity walk is a boost for books

Sponsored walkers from Buriton were amongst the first to set foot along the Shipwrights Way in March following an official opening ceremony.

The occasion raised money and awareness for the community’s ‘Village-to-Village’ projects in rural Ghana.

Walk organiser Terry Owens said: “It was a very successful day despite the inclement weather. There was an excellent turn out. We registered about 70 people at the start of the walk, which was very encouraging.”

What the ? ?! Quiz Night in the village hall

The antidote to ordinary quiz nights ?

This highly entertaining Quiz Night, with Quiz Master Paul Martin, sells out quite quickly (the last four years have completely sold out) – so please book your places early.

It’s only £5 per person with all money raised going towards improving living conditions in Buriton’s sister community of Dominase in rural Ghana.

Be amongst the first to walk the Shipwrights Way ? and raise money for Dominase: Sunday 24th March.

A few years ago Bernie & Mary Saunders organised a "Walk for Water" along the South Downs Way which raised over ?5,000 for water supplies in Dominase. Something similar - but less strenuous - is now being planned ...

The Shipwrights Way is a new long distance route passing through some beautiful countryside and attractive villages in the east of Hampshire – designed to connect to local rail stations.

Buriton’s Village-to-Village Group has been chosen as the official charity for a special sponsored walk – linked to the formal opening of the new route.

Parish Proms - a great night out

"A great evening" seems to be the overwhelming reaction to Buriton's first ever 'Parish Proms'. Held in the magnificent Manor Barn on Sunday 9 September, the event contained a mixture of humorous songs and Albert Hall favourites - something for everybody - and it provided another opportunity to wave those Union Jacks and bunting.

A bargain at only £5 per person, the event still managed to raise well over £500 for Buriton's link with Dominase in rural Ghana.

More great news - about loos

Over 350 children attend the Primary and Secondary Schools in Dompoase - an outlying hamlet of Dominase in rural Ghana. And, until now, they have not had anywhere private to go to the loo. Teenage girls would choose not to go to school for a few days every month; missing out on vital learning.

Now, thanks to Buriton’s link, all that can change – and all the children will be able to wash their hands thanks to a big tank which collects rainwater from the roof.

Everyone is very grateful – particularly to Littlejohns Bathrooms of Petersfield who have paid for this project.

School "Walkathon" for Africa

Two hundred and fifty schoolchildren walked to meet together on the top of the South Downs this month in a unique celebration to mark the Olympic Games and the schools' links with rural Ghana.

Children from Buriton Primary School and Ditcham Park Juniors met near to the Coulters Dean Local Nature Reserve and sent their best wishes to children in the parish’s link village of Dominase.

Each school had made a special Olympic Torch which they exchanged in a small ceremony before medals were awarded to all the participants.
