Commemorative bench – crowd-funding website

There is now a crowd-funding opportunity to help with the community’s commemorative bench project.

There is good progress with fund-raising for the community’s tribute to mark the centenary of the First World War and a new crowd-funding opportunity has now been established.

The project’s aim is to commemorate all those who suffered and were affected by war and details are available via this web link: https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/commemorative-bench-buriton

Please note that the link expires on 30th July.

Playground opening – a great success

The new play facilities were officially opened on 12th May

In spite of poor weather the occasion was a great success and the new equipment was enjoyed by all.

A big ‘thank you’ was given to all the working group for all their hard work on the day and for the whole project and to Susan Shone, Nick Bridger and Matt Marriott for helping with the fencing and to Chris Styles for cutting the grass.

Buriton Parish Council needs a new part-time Clerk

An enthusiastic and skilled administrator is required to support the Council in this vital role - an opportunity to be involved in local issues and to work largely from home.

Could that be you? Or somebody that you know?

On average the role involves about 6 hours per week and the rate of pay is up to £12.30 / hour (depending on experience).

Applicants will need good admin and book-keeping skills and strong interpersonal skills.

Previous knowledge/experience of the work and role of local Councils is desirable and an interest in local affairs is essential.

First new National Trail signs are installed near Buriton

Towards the end of February, the South Downs National Park Authority installed the very first of a new design of South Downs Way fingerposts above the village.

The new, eye-catching signs are intended to help build on the identity of the National Trail and the National Park as well as providing more informative for the public by displaying icons for the user-types that can legally use the rights of way.

People will start to see more of these pop up across the South Downs Way as other old signs are replaced over the next few years: but you saw it here first!

Parish Council Chairman’s Statement about “intemperate correspondence”

At the beginning of the Parish Council meeting on Monday 27th November, Chairman Tim Concannon delivered the following speech.

"I understand that there are differing views about what is best for the Village. We are blessed in that there are so very many people who care deeply enough about our community to want to do what is good for the village as they see it.

However, in their enthusiasm, some people forget that there are other views than their own.

I am concerned that, in this age of twitter and trolling, people do not always think about the effect that their principled, but thoughtless words may have on their recipients.

New handrails on popular footpath

The Parish Council has arranged for new handrails to be fitted at both ends of the North Lane ("The Lawns") footpath.

After suggestions from Buriton’s “Walking to Health” Group that the steps leading down onto North Lane near to Pillmead House and at Pitcoft Lane could become dangerous, the Parish Council has arranged for new handrails to be fitted.

The Parish Council successfully applied for some grant funding towards the total costs so that not all expenditure fell upon local tax payers. The work has also tidied up the flights of steps, returning them to the condition that they were in many, many years ago.
