District Council work to scoop up silt and weeds

East Hampshire District Council has issued a press release with information about its project at the village pond.

A “bouyant bulldozer was used to scoop more than 200 cubic metres of silt from the pond, making it a healthier home for native species.

“The silt was re-used to create an island as a haven for local wildlife. Some of the larger carp have also been removed and rehomed as they prey on the smaller fish.

Cllr Robert Mocatta, EHDC Portfolio Holder for Prosperity and Regeneration, said: “It is great to see all the silt that has built up over the last decade or so dredged up and then reconstituted into a small island where birds and aquatic mammals can take refuge.

“I am sure that when the planting on the island is complete in the early spring, the pond will be a beautiful and tranquil spot for visitors and villagers.”

The press release explains that the District Council has not had to spend any of its own money on the project as the work has been funded by £35,000 of Government money drawn from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
