“My Soul, There Is a Country”

"The Best of British Choral Music"

The renowned London-based choral quartet, Sonare, have embarked on a concert tour – including a treat for us in Buriton.

The history and heritage of choral music stretches across the ages and from around the world and Sonare describe Great Britain’s contribution as “essential, stirring and sensational.”

Their programme will feature unmissable favourites alongside underappreciated gems, with fascinating musical history commentary from the singers themselves.

In St Mary's Church. Entry is free with a retiring collection.

Piano Recital by Tom Cooper

Chopin, Majorca and the Preludes Op.28 in St Mary’s, Buriton

Tom will play pieces by Frederick Chopin written in the period 1837-9, during which the composer made a disastrous trip to Majorca and also composed some of his best-loved pieces.

The programme will include the Scherzo No.2 in B flat minor and the Preludes Op.28.

The concert will last about 45 minutes.

A retiring collection will be taken in aid of the work of St Mary’s.

Volunteers for South Lane Cemetery grass cutting

St. Mary’s Church is in earnest need of help …

Help is needed to bolster the small team of ageing volunteers who currently maintain the cemetery in South Lane.

As a result of the pandemic, the church has lost the services of the Community Payback Team which did such a good job at cutting and clearing away.

As it stands, the church simply cannot maintain the space to the same standard with the resources it has.

St. Mary’s would be extremely grateful to anyone who has a few hours to spare and would be prepared to join them occasionally to help with this valuable task.

Honouring the new King …

… and making Buriton proud

On the morning of Coronation Day, 6th May 2023, a band of ringers at Buriton’s St Mary’s church rang a peal of Cambridge Surprise Minor.

Not only did they ring for a solid three hours but they achieved 8th place on Bellboard’s listing of highest-ranking peal performances over the Coronation weekend. Above them were the likes of Westminster Abbey, St Paul’s Cathedral and six other Cathedrals.

They received fantastic reviews from all in the village who had the privilege of hearing such magnificent ringing.
