A real treat in the spring
Tucked behind the well-known building now housing the Gilbert White and Oates museum are a series of gardens which David Standing has been re-discovering and restoring since 1979 – including the famous wine-pipe seat, cut-out statue of Hercules and herb and kitchen gardens.
Mr Standing is Head Gardener at the The Wakes and he has meticulously researched and used old letters, journals and diaries to restore these important gardens which had almost completely disappeared after Gilbert White’s death. He is responsible for re-introducing old varieties of fruit trees and numerous other plants.
Although this famous naturalist was born about 130 years after Buriton’s famous John Goodyer, it is likely that Gilbert White will have been aware of the findings of such a close and learned ‘neighbour’.
Everybody is welcome on 1 April, the Wednesday before Easter, at 7.30 in St Mary’s Church. As always there will be refreshments in the interval and a retiring collection.
