Dozens of Primary School children took part in Dominase’s latest inter-school reading in Ghana to find the best readers in each age group
Buriton’s ‘Village-to-Village’ group commenced this annual initiative in 2014 and, as well as paying for all the transport to bring children from the outlying schools (and for refreshments during the day), the small charity pays for prizes and awards.
All the children who took part (one from each age-group class in each school) were given an exercise book to reward them for taking part with bigger prizes (school bags, rulers, pencils, erasers and pens) for the twelve pupils who emerged in the first and second positions for each class: P1 to P6.
Each school had selected its best reader, boy or girl, in each of their six age-based classes and these children were then all brought together to be tested in front of a special panel of judges in Dompoase, near to Dominase.
A P4 pupil, Lawrencia Arthur from Mensakrom D/A Primary School, emerged as the overall winner of the program with the organisers explaining that “she was able to compete with older P6 pupils and she was superb.”
Local Education officials in Ghana believe this event, which is always fiercely contested, is helping to improve standards year-on-year and is making a positive impact on local education attainment.
The competition complements other support for education in Dominase provided by funding from Buriton. Thousands of Supplementary Reading Books have been provided to schools in the area and dozens of teachers have been supported through official teacher-training courses.
Thanks to the generosity of a local sponsor, every penny of money raised for this charity is spent ‘on the ground’ in Dominase - none of it is spent on any sort of administrative costs.
