Treasure-trove of old documents donated to Buriton Heritage Bank

Almost 50 old documents about the parish, some of which are 300 years old, return home.

Descendants of Dr Bennion, who lived at Nursted House until the 1970s, have kindly re-united a host of old documents with their roots recently.

All the papers appear to relate to the Nursted area of the parish but some refer to transactions undertaken by the Hugonin family as long ago as 1715.

A number of other records include conveyances, leases, releases and 'bargain sales' from the 1700s and there is one very large, four-page 'Marriage Settlement' between Francis Hugonin Esq and Miss Charlotte Edgar dated 1st July 1777.

The Buriton Village Association plans to study each of the documents briefly before delivering them to the Hampshire Records Office in Winchester for safe-keeping - and to enable researchers from far and wide to have access to the material.

The documents will remain the property of the Buriton Village Association and it will be possible to borrow them back should they be required for research or exhibition purposes within the parish.

The Association is very grateful to the family of the late Mrs Margaret Lumsden-Cook for making contact and agreeing to pass on the documents to the Heritage Bank in this way.
