While travelling in traffic between Buriton and Portsmouth, or northwards towards Guildford, have you ever thought that you are following one of the most important routes in British history?
The link between London and the country's great naval fortress at Portsmouth has been travelled by powerful people and by ordinary wayfarers - and it has played its part in some important national events.
Responsibility for maintaining the road was originally down to the local parishes, which left small villages like Buriton with large bills for looking after their stretch of the road.
Local historian Jennifer Goldsmith has been researching the history of the road and has unearthed some of the significant events, places and people which made it so important over the years.
At times journeys were far from easy she explains: "Many people actually wrote their will before setting off on their travels. There was the danger of crime and road accidents, quite apart from the likelihood of getting a severe cold if you were sitting on the outside of a stagecoach."
Jennifer will be coming to Buriton on 29th March to give a talk and tell us about her findings.
The talk will take place in Buriton Village Hall at 7:30pm.
All are welcome.
Admission is free with a retiring collection.
