Buriton Village Association
An audience of over sixty villagers and friends were highly entertained by Andrew Robertshaw's illustrated talk about 'The Making of War Horse' in October.
Mr Robertshaw had been a special military adviser on Steven Spielberg’s film 'War Horse' and he provided a fascinating and amusing insight into the making of a major blockbuster movie – as well as unique knowledge about the role of horses in the conflicts of the First World War.
The South Downs National Park Authority is encouraging community groups to "uncover the hidden historic gems of the local landscape" and volunteers from Buriton are already on board.
The aim of the three-year lottery-funded project, called ‘Secrets of the High Woods’, is to investigate the history of the Wooded downs through, newly acquired lidar data (a laser-beam survey conducted from aircraft), field survey in the woodlands , archival research and oral history collection.
Over 100 people packed into the church on 10th June to hear two fascinating presentations about Operation Overlord and the D-Day Landings of 70 years ago.
In quite a coup for the village, the Curator of the renowned D-Day Museum in Portsmouth, Andrew Whitmarsh, showed dozens of rarely-seen images of the build-up to the campaign as well as photographs of the famous invasion of Normandy.
He also explained background context to D-Day as well as many local connections.
A unique event bringing together historians, schoolchildren and dance professionals will be held in Petersfield Square this summer to commemorate the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War.
Researchers from the Buriton Heritage Bank have been selected to work with the Petersfield Museum and other local groups to compile local historical information so that choreographers and schoolchildren can create authentic dances.
Buriton has been chosen as one of four small communities from Hampshire to take part in a special "D Day at 70" project - and your help is being sought.
The D Day Museum in Portsmouth has won an important award from the Heritage Lottery Fund to find out more about the build-up and follow-up to D-Day in 1944 – and they have selected Buriton Village Association as a partner.
Local expert Nick Heasman will explain many things that make the countryside and community of Buriton very special: from the wonderful starry night skies above our heads to the huge natural reservoir of the chalk rocks below our feet - via all the special plants, trees and wildlife all around us. Very few parts of the planet are special enough to be included in National Parks - Buriton is one of those special places ...
Nick Heasman is the Area Manager for the South Downs National Park Authority.
The talk will commence at 7.30pm on Wednesday 12th March
PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS MEETING WILL NOW BE HELD IN BURITON CHURCH WHILST REPAIRS ARE UNDERTAKEN TO THE VILLAGE HALL.

To mark this special anniversary we are honoured to have the Curator of the famous D-Day Museum, Andrew Whitmarsh, and at least one local veteran of the Normandy Landings at a special meeting arranged by the Buriton Village Association.
