Buriton’s dark skies star in National Park event

Local initiatives are show-cased to an audience on You-Tube

The South Downs National Park Authority organised an on-line event for scores of parish councils on 21 April 2021 with work undertaken in Buriton included as a case study.

The special ‘webinar’ was also recorded and can be viewed via this link.

After introductions, the event began with two short films about the South Downs International Dark Sky Reserve followed by information about planning policies and tourism opportunities as well as guidance for local communities from the SDNPA’s dark skies expert, Dan Oakley.

More trees on the recreation ground

As well as letting some of the grass grow ...

Another crab apple and an oak have been planted recently, to add to the other trees planted by the Parish Council in recent months.

It is hoped that these native species will add to the attractiveness of the village in the years to come as well as helping wildlife.

And the new mowing contract for the recreation ground will see the establishment of strips of longer grass to provide a wider range of habitats and encourage improvements in biodiversity – including important pollinator species.

More tree planting

The Parish Council has planted more trees recently – and there’s a chance to buy your own.

The Parish Council has arranged for a range of new trees to be planted recently, including Hawthorn, Crab Apple, a Wild Service tree and an Oak.

It is hoped that these native species will add to the attractiveness of the village in the years to come as well as helping wildlife.

It is hoped that more planting can take place later in the year (if conditions and funding allows) as part of the community’s ‘Help Nature Help Us’ pollinator initiative.

Network Rail work will require part of car park; CANCELLED

Late change of plan: parking spaces will no longer be required for this project. The details below have now been superseded as Network Rail has found an alternative location which "should reduce disruption and disturbance in the local area".

Network Rail have advised the Parish Council that they would like to use part of the village hall car park for periods of time in March and May to help them undertake important maintenance work on the track near the village.

The Council has agreed to this request as long as Network Rail confine their use to a part of the car park nearest to the tennis courts and to the dates specified.

Help our Hospital Heroes

Please help with pictures and messages of support

A Buriton resident who is a Director at the QA Hospital in Portsmouth (and heavily involved in the Covid situation) would welcome posters, pictures and messages of support to help boost the morale of staff.

Steve Thomas explains that similar messages received during the first peak still line the hospital walls and continue to be a great source of encouragement at a time when all staff are under immense strain in all hospital wards/units.

COVID-19 vaccine scams

Fraudsters are trying to steal personal details …

Scammers are taking advantage of the COVID-19 vaccine rollout through a cruel but convincing text in an attempt to steal people’s personal and financial details.

A dangerous fake text message, purporting to be from the NHS, has been circulating which tells people that they’re eligible to apply for the vaccine. The link takes people to an extremely convincing fake NHS website that asks for personal details, but people are rightly suspicious when asked for their bank/card details in order to ‘check your identity’.

Buriton in Tier 4 after Christmas Day

Everyone must stay at home, apart from very limited exceptions.

The whole of the East Hampshire district and surrounding areas moves into 'tier four' at the beginning of Boxing Day (Saturday December 26).

This means that people must stay at home, apart from limited exceptions: food, medical reasons or work.

The area has very rapidly rising level of infections.

Around 1 in 3 people have no symptoms, so will be spreading the virus without realising.

Work from home if you can.

ONLY up to 2 people can meet in outdoor public spaces.

Do not travel unless necessary.
