“Braving the shave” in the village hall: 10th November from 6pm

Everyone is welcome – not just to watch heads being shaved, but also to have some fun.

In memory of Sarah Haywood (nee Gaylard), who died last year aged 47, a number of her relatives and friends will be “Braving the shave” to raise valuable funds for Macmillan Cancer Support.

There will be a bar, music, food, raffle and lots of laughter.

Doors will open at 6pm and the shave will take place around 7pm.

But donations and sponsorship can be made in the meantime by using the links below, via the Five Bells or on the night in the village hall.

Confirmed shavers are:

Special ‘Tower Open’ Day

A chance to have a go at bell-ringing at St Mary's church, Buriton

Bellringing will be demonstrated by experienced ringers and those who show an interest will be given a few pulls on a rope end to see how it feels.

There are vacancies in Buriton’s bell-ringing team and anyone interested in joining the merry band will be able to swop contact details so that arrangements can be made for a follow-up lesson (on silenced bells!) at a mutually convenient time.

The bell-ringers practice every Wednesday from 7.30-9.00pm and ring for Sunday Service from 9.30-10.00am

Incredible Buriton jewellery from over 3,000 years ago !

The Petersfield Museum has just unveiled its latest exhibition – which includes “The Buriton Ornamental Hoard”.

The Hoard consists of four attractive bronze ornaments (two bracelets and two necklaces, known as torcs) which come from the Middle Bronze Age period (c1400-1250 BC).

They were found in the parish in 2016 and the Petersfield Museum has been able to acquire them (under the provisions of the Treasure Acts) thanks to a generous donation from an anonymous benefactor.

It is believed that the pieces are likely to have been made in this region and were probably buried as offerings to the gods.

Can you help to ‘pave the way’?

The Petersfield Museum is offering local people an opportunity to have their name etched for ever into their new facilities.

For a small donation, individuals (or organisations) can have a brick engraved with their name – or that of a loved one.

All the personalised bricks will feature prominently either in front of the museum or in the courtyard area.

This is a unique chance to ‘make your mark’ – or to immortalise family members – whilst supporting the Petersfield Museum in its plans to modernise and expand.

More details can be found in the attached leaflet (below) and the suggested minimum donation of £30 includes the cost of engraving and laying the brick.

Magical music-making in Buriton on Sunday 22 April

A concert of words and music entirely devoted to Franz Schubert

On Sunday 22 April, at 3pm a concert of words and music entirely devoted to Franz Schubert — a ‘Schubertiad’ — involving a pianist, a violinist, a cellist and a singer will be given in St Mary’s church by Southsea-based cellist Mikhail Lezdkan and three colleagues: Oliver Nelson, Alex Poulton and Bela Hartmann.

Echoing what Schubert and his friends used regularly to do in Vienna, between them they will join forces in a clutch of piano pieces, duos and trios, and some of Schubert’s immortal songs including The Linden Tree and The Hurdy-Gurdy Man.

Thefts from vehicles

Advice about leaving valuables in vehicles following recent incidents

A number of cars have been broken into in recent evenings including one in North Lane, Buriton, in the early hours (about 01.30am) of Wednesday 17 January.

Two vehicles were entered whilst parked on a private home driveway. After an untidy search, nothing was stolen but the police are appealing for any information: please call telephone 101 and quote reference 44180020812.

Apparently the culprits may have some sort of ‘pass key’ with which they can enter most types of vehicle and so everyone may wish to make sure that they don’t leave valuables in vehicles.
