Temporary signs help to reduce massacre in Buriton

Beware: Toads Crossing

You may not know about it, but Buriton is the site of an annual migration in late winter or early spring when common toads travel back to their breeding areas: usually on the first warm, damp evenings of the year (February to April).

Toads spend the majority their year on land, in woodland, hedgerows and gardens. They are nocturnal creatures, and hibernate each winter in frost-free undergrowth or holes. Every Spring they must return to the water to breed.

Community litter-pick: “the village looks amazing again”

Thank you to everyone who helped …

Over 50 volunteers helped with Buriton’s spring-clean litter-picking morning on Saturday 25th February.

And this year they filled almost 40 large sacks with discarded tin cans, plastic and glass bottles, fast food wrappers, crisp packets and other litter from along the highway verges and open spaces in the parish.

Our lanes and hedgerows now look tidy again and the appearance of the village has been transformed – let’s keep it that way?!

Emerging proposals for a new hotel and ‘cycling centre’

Another potential development at the Greenway Lane roundabout.

The outcome of the Public Inquiry into the Re-Charge One planning application for up to 60 eco-lodges, cafes, shops and over 120 parking spaces will not be known for some time. The National Park’s planners had unanimously refused permission for this development but the developers appealed to the Government’s Planning Inspectors to try to get that decision changed. There is information about that planning application and the public inquiry here.

Children’s posters show disgust

Dog poo and litter is unpleasant and dangerous

There is a small minority of dog owners in Buriton who do not clean up after their pets.

Schoolchildren have produced vivid posters to be displayed around the village in the hope that adults will take notice and act responsibly.

The children’s actions were prompted by a visit to the school by the District Council’s Environmental Enforcement manager, Emma Matthews, and her team, reported here.

Spring Clean litter-picking morning: Saturday 25th February

It's amazing how much litter accumulates along our lanes and hedgerows - and how untidy it can make the parish look.

Come and lend a hand on this community 'spring clean' Saturday - anytime from 9.30am - even just an hour will be a great help …

Adam and Hannah Griffiths (and family!) are kindly ‘hosting’ the event again this year and would welcome lots of pairs of hands.

Please bring gloves and other equipment if you can, and report to Heatherfield where Adam and Hannah will sort you out with a high viz waistcoat and details of where to pick.

Photo identification needed for elections in May

Voters will need to show photographic ID on 4 May.

Accepted forms of ID include: a UK, European Economic Area (EEA) or Commonwealth passport; a UK, EEA or Commonwealth photo drivers’ licence; and some concessionary travel passes, such as an older person’s bus pass.

Voters will be able to use expired ID if they are still recognisable from the photo.

Anyone who does not have one of the accepted forms of ID can apply for a free Voter Authority Certificate here and the District Council may also arrange local arrangements.
