Buriton Village Show - better than ever!

Entries in the morning; Show in the afternoon

Buriton's popular annual village show will be held on Saturday 20 August and, once again, there will be two exciting venues:

  • many of the celebrated displays and competitions for ‘best in show’ will be in the village hall, with lots of additional stalls on the recreation ground
  • down the High Street at the Manor Barn you’ll find arrangements of some of the fruit and vegetable classes and other attractions

Refreshments will be available at both venues.

Buriton’s Xmas Market (Saturday 4 December)

Now to be held in the Manor Barn: 1pm to 4pm

In light of the current Corona situation the organisers have decided to relocate this event to the Manor Barn.

Come along and explore the wide range of stalls range of stalls run by local crafters and the Buriton Primary School.

Various musical performances will add to the festive atmosphere.

To keep everyone safe it’s asked that masks are worn.

Please note that sadly the mobile Post Office will not be there nor will there be any refreshments.

Don Eades photos on display

Exhibition at the Petersfield Museum from 24 November to 5 March

Buriton’s own Don Eades took photos for the Petersfield Post from 1962-1987 and donated over 100,000 negatives to the local community.

A new exhibition, named after one of Don's well known catch-phrases "There's no harm in a smile", will run in the re-vamped Petersfield Museum from 24th November featuring portraits he created: details are available here: https://www.petersfieldmuseum.co.uk/whats-on

A smell from your pipes?

Southern Water warn everyone about what is being flushed down local toilets and sinks.

“Blockages in your pipes can cause a real stink and flood your home.”

This is the headline warning on a new leaflet delivered to households in the village.

In spite of regular articles in the Parish Magazine, the water company is trying yet again to raise awareness about everyone’s kitchen and toilet habits.

They explain that small changes can have a big impact:

The English Village Pond

Buriton featured in new book

A new guidebook includes details of about thirty village ponds – including Buriton – with our jewel being selected for the front cover!

The book, written by Ian Thompson and published by Bluestone Books, explains that during the latter part of the nineteenth century and the early years of the twentieth, thousands of village ponds were destroyed – but points out that those that remain now help to attract visitors and patronage for local pubs and businesses.

The book summarises past uses of village ponds, a range of different types of pond and their benefits to wildlife.

South Downs volunteers improve footpath along the Links

Can we help to keep it …?

A small group of hard-working volunteers from the National Park’s Volunteer Ranger Service spent a long day cutting their way through dense brambles and scrub to reinstate the main footpath along the Links.

The footpath had become very overgrown and, over time, users had gradually created new paths further down the slopes of the valley but these were becoming slippery and potentially dangerous in bad weather.

Only paper, pee and poo down your loo

Southern Water looks to avoid equipment failures and pollution

The water company is worried about what people are flushing down local toilets and sinks.

In recent years they have had some severe issues at the Buriton Waste Water Treatment Works with excessively high levels of Fat Oil and Grease which can cause their equipment to fail, leading to pollution in the nearby stream.

Only paper, pee and poo should go down the loo (no cleansing wipes, nappies, baby wipes, cotton pads, ear buds or anything plastic).

Dark Skies Festival

Buriton is a special place in the South Downs International Dark Skies Reserve

Buriton is one of only a handful of ‘Dark Skies Discovery Sites’ in the National Park – which is why everyone is encouraged to minimise unnecessary external lighting and ensure that any lights only send light downwards (not up or out).

The National Park's on-line Festival in February 2021 highlighted people’s personal experiences of starry skies, and how to make the most of the view from your garden or on a local walk.

Thanks from our Hospital Heroes

The ‘Big Buriton Boost’ is being greatly appreciated

All the posters, pictures and cards received so far are now being displayed at the QA Hospital in Portsmouth and have been tweeted across all the wards.

Feedback from Steve Thomas confirms that the messages of support are greatly appreciated.

The staff are still under immense strain in all hospital wards/units and so any more messages are still welcomed: the box to leave your messages for these NHS Hospital Heroes is still at the bottom of the Five Bells driveway, underneath the community produce table, with a bottle of hand sanitiser.
